This recipe carries it weight around as the boss of all Aqueous creams. Some of my clients who make it are nurses, Moms, Pharmacists, sporting, athletes and more. You can add your own twist to it by using some really great active ingredients e.g. Tea tree oil, vitamin e oil and a whole lot more. For example.. if you need a cream for bed sores..add tea tree essential oil. Just remember to do your research on the recommended amount of the tea tree oil. The essential oils or general medicinal ingredients are called ACTIVE ingredients. The aqueous cream just assists to dilute and apply the active ingredients to the skin. It is called a carrier cream. The bulk of the cream is made from water..hence the term Aqueous cream. Now remember that because it calls for a lot of water which is generally a bacteria magnet.. You can make it with or without Preservatives. But only make it in small quantities if opting for a preservative free cream. Or for a longer shelf life..use kemaben and deionised water.
Creating an aqueous cream at home is a simple and effective way to craft a gentle moisturizer suitable for various skin types.
You can colour your cream using water soluble dye and if you dont want to use essential oils you can use fragrance oils.
Method
In a stainless steel pot, melt emulsifying wax, white petroleum jelly and oil together. Really gently and over a low heat until just melted. Add this to the hot water. Commence blending immediately. Preferably with a stick blender. Once cooled add glycerine and blend a bit more until smooth and consistent.
Now you can add your active ingredients. Stir in well and make sure your product is properly cooled before decanting.
I always want to beat myself up about the fact that I did not publish this one first.. But as time has gone and as I have learnt I am sharing my journey with you. so forgive me for keeping it in the order that it is published in. This basic formulation is the one to go to for all emulsifying products, creams, lotions, butters. Reduce the water.. substitute the petroleum jelly for more natural goodies. Oh ..before I forget.. you can add.. water soluble dye to colour it.. and essential oils or fragrance oils. As with the rest of my recipes.
