Gels
Notes For making Gels:
Gel kits are available which make 5 litres of base gel. From this kit you can culstomise your recipe to the end product you need.
De-ionised water is water that has been purified via the reverse osmosis method. It is cost effective and expands the shelf life of your products.
The option of using a preservative such as Kemaben (paraben) is available from fun with soap.
For products made for yourself in small batches it is not necessary to use parabens for a preservative.
Wheatgerm oil is a natural Preservative so you could use this as an alternative.
If you don’t have access to clean water you can purchase hikers drops or tablets from outdoor /camping stores to purify your water. Steri tab works quite well.
Ensure the water is very hot…not rapidly boiling but hot.
Applications: Waterless Hand cleanser, Hair gel, After sun cooling gel, treatment gel, massage gel, Foot gel.
Gels are commonly used for personal care products as a base to “Carry” active ingredients .
After Shave soothing gel – Makes 5 Litres
Basic Gel kits available - Makes a basic gel - Simply add your own oils etc to customise your product
1 container Carbomer 940 powder
1 container T.E.A (triethanolamine)
5000ml Hot water (de-ionised)
5ml Tea tree essential oil
½ teaspoon Peppermint essential oil
· Add Carbomer 940 powder to water. Blend in well for 10 minutes.
· Allow to stand 7 hours with blending every 3 hours for five minutes.
· Give the mixture a final blend. Add the T.E.A.
Blend swiftly with electric blender …just a quick whiz. Then using a spatula give the entire mixture a fast stir using wide movements until you notice it has become thick gel. Add the oils and stir. Add a few drops green liquid dye.
Apply to skin after shaving.
Arnica with Tea tree and chamomile Muscle Gel Rub
500ml Clique Gel Base
10ml Arnica Extract
5ml Tea tree oil
5ml Chamomile extract
Blend all ingredients well into the gel base.
These 3 active ingredients are great for sore muscles or if you are an active sporty person.
Lavender Massage Gel
1 container Carbomer 940
1 container T.E.A (triethanolamine)
5000ml Hot water (de-ionised)
5ml Lavender essential oil
· Add Carbomer 940 powder to water. Blend in well for 10 minutes.
· Allow to stand 7 hours with blending every 3 hours for five minutes.
· Give the mixture a final blend.
· Add the T.E.A.
· Blend swiftly with electric blender …just a quick whiz. Then using a spatula give the entire mixture a fast stir using wide movements Until you notice that it has become thick gel.
· Add the oil and mix well. Add a few drops purple liquid dye.
Massage into Skin. Lavender is popular for it’s relaxing properties. Do not use Lavender if you are pregnant or lactating.
Cucumber Eye Gel
Refreshing, moisturising, soothing, Astringency
Makes 1 kg
1 Litre Distilled warm water
5g T E A (not the tea you drink)
5g carbomer 940.
2ml Cucumber extract
2ml Witchhazel
To the warmed water, add carbomer 940. Mix well fo 10- 15 minutes (with rest intervals) until the powder is well dispersed.
Wait 2 hours. Add T E A.
Mix in with a spatula with fast motion.
Add the remaining ingredients and mix well (very well)
Tip: warm distilled water in a glass container in the microwave, it is a lot more hygienic.
Apply under your eyes in the mornings.
No More cucumber slices!!!
After Sun Cooling Gel
– Makes 5 Litres
1 container Carbomer 940 powder
1 container T.E.A (triethanolamine)

· Add Carbomer 940 powder to water. Blend in well for 10 minutes.

Tea Tree Oil & Peppermint Oils are great for relieving and cooling off sunburnt skin.
To get started you may only want to make 1 litre, if this is the case then use the quantities below from your kit.
Use 1 litre hot water.
Add 1 Heaped teaspoon Carbomer 940 powder.
Allow to stand 2 hours with blending in between.
Add 1 and ½ teaspoons T.E.A.
Blend.
Add fragrance and essential oils.
Optional add 0.06% kemaben.
